Thousand Saguaros

The saguaro cactus is an iconic symbol of the Sonoran Desert. These magnificent giants, with their towering arms outstretched towards the sky, have long captivated the imagination. However, the saguaro's future is threatened by habitat loss and development, which are encroaching on their once vast domain.

Over the course of several months, I embarked on a photographic journey through the Sonoran Desert, in Tucson, traversing over 80 miles of trails to document the saguaro's presence in its different habitats. With each step, I was struck by the resilience and adaptability of these remarkable plants, thriving in an environment that challenges many other species. I captured 1,000 saguaros all over the Tucson area.

The project also highlighted the challenges facing saguaro habitats. Witnessing firsthand the impact of development, I saw how the spread of urban areas and agricultural land is encroaching on the saguaro's natural range. This encroachment threatens not only the saguaro itself but also the entire desert ecosystem that depends on it.

By capturing the beauty and resilience of saguaro cacti, this project aims to inspire a deeper appreciation for these desert sentinels. Through education and outreach, it seeks to raise awareness of the threats facing saguaro habitats and encourage conservation efforts to protect these iconic plants for future generations.

PUBLIC ART - MURAL PROPOSAL

This project proposes the creation of a large-scale mural featuring 1,000 photographs of saguaro cacti, capturing their beauty, resilience, and significance within the Sonoran Desert ecosystem.
